Boston Research Group’s On-line Tab Browser requires users to go through a series of steps to obtain results from the DCP 2001 or DCP 2002 studies. At each step, you will be asked to make a selection that will target your inquiry to the available data.

In order to begin, select the year in which you are interested (2000, 2002, or the comparison between 2001 and 2002). If only one year appears, you only have access to that particular study. Please contact Boston Research Group if you would like to purchase the second study.

At any point in your inquiry, you can use the “Back” button to back up a step and change your selection. You can also click on “Home” from any screen to return to Step 1.

Step 1. Select a Topic.

  • All of the questions in the survey have been grouped into one of sixteen topics/categories.
  • Click on the topic that most closely matches your subject of interest.
  • Then click on “Continue” to view a detailed list of questions pertaining to the selected topic. In some cases, you will be given a choice of sub-topics before the list of questions is displayed.

Step 2. Select a Question.

  • You will see a list of all the survey questions that apply to the selected topic.
  • Click on the question you for which you want data. You will only be allowed to select one question per request.
  • Then click on “Continue” to move to the next step.

Step 3. Select a Group.

  • Next, you will be asked to choose a group of respondents by which to look at the data. (The total column is included in all groups.) Groups include recordkeepers, plan asset categories, number of employee categories, etc.
  • Click on the name of a group. You may select more than one group at a time. To do so, hold down the key on your keyboard as you select each group.
  • Then click on “Continue” to view the list of choices within each group.
  • We have tried to anticipate all of the different ways that you will want to cut the data. However, we may not have covered everything. It is not possible to create your own data tables using this data analysis tool. If you do not see the group you are interested in, you can contact Boston Research Group to inquire about obtaining the information from the database.
  • We have also included the ability to customize your own banners (a banner is a collection of pre-selected groups that you want to analyze). If you have already created a customized banner, this banner will appear in the upper right of your screen. See the instructions below for how to create a customized banner.

Step 4. Select Specific Data Points.

  • The next screen displays all of the specific data points included in your chosen group(s).
  • Each data point has a check box next to the description. All data points are automatically selected. You can select or de-select each specific data point by clicking the check box on or off.
  • After you have customized your data points, click on “Continue” to view the data results.

Step 5. The Data Table.

  • The Tab Browser data will now be displayed on the screen.
  • You can print the data directly from the On-line tool using the Print function of your Internet browser.
  • Or, you can save the data to your system. To do so, choose “File: Save As” in your Internet browser. The file will save as a “HTML” database file. The file will open directly into Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet software that accepts HTML files.
  • If the table you requested has a * in place of data then the data is unavailable due to small sample size. All data that is based on five or less cases has been excluded.

When you are ready to request another data table, you have three options:
  • Click on “Home” to return to step one.
  • Click on “Back” to back up and change your selections.
  • Click on “Next” to view the table for the next question in the survey.

Customizing a Banner

  • The Tab Browser will allow you to customize up to ten banners of data points. Using this feature you can look at the data for your target markets without re-specifying the data points every time. To create a custom banner, follow the steps listed below.
  • Create a banner by selecting the groups you are interested in looking at in Step 3. You may select more than one option from the list at a time.
  • In Step 4, choose which of the specific data points you want to look at. Then click on “Continue” to view the data results.
  • On the data output screen click on the “Save” button. This will bring you to another screen where you can name your banner.
  • Once you have typed in a name for your custom banner, click on “Add” and you will be returned to the data output screen.
  • The next time you request a table, your customized banner(s) will be listed in the upper right of the screen in Step 3.

When you are finished using the On-line Tab Browser, click on “Log Out” or exit the site using your Internet browser.
